About The Area

This plan focuses on Travis, Bastrop, and Caldwell because these three counties face some of the largest health disparities in Central Texas. With a population of 1.3 million people spread over roughly 2,500 square miles, the three-county study area houses communities with diverse health needs. In Austin's “Eastern Crescent”, low-income residents face food deserts, high rates of chronic health conditions, rising prices and the threat of displacement. In Caldwell and Bastrop Counties, farmers and ranchers, agricultural laborers, and other rural residents face high rates of obesity and diabetes as well as limited access to mental and physical health care resources.
